I call the Rock Garden of Chandigarh as the Open Air Museum made from scrap. This famous garden started by Mr. Nek Chand (1924–2015) in the year 1957 has become a must visit tourist attraction in Chandigarh. This year in May we decided to go up North to see some snow and enjoy the pleasant green surroundings of Manali, Dharamshala & Dalhousie in the summer vacations. On our way from Mumbai we stopped in Chandigarh for a day and saw the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake & Rose Garden.
Rock Garden was such superb experience when we saw the amazing things made out of total scrap, waste materials, broken glasses and ceramics, bangles, mosaics, etc. It really showed the imaginary power, vision and hard work of a man who started this single handed. We were told he did this in his spare time and literally for more than 15 years he hid his work from the authorities. When the park was officially open as a public place, Mr. Chand was officially appointed and given a team of 50 people to train and maintain this.
The sheer genius of the man is reflected in every nook and corner of the park. There is a waterfall also with few small caves and structures which give a very fantasy type feel. It shows how hard work and dedication of a man can convert literally a backyard space into such a beautiful and huge attraction. There are 1.50 lac visitors approximately on an average in a month who come here and enjoy this wonder. The Rock Garden has also become Asia’s one of the significant recycling centres in association with the Nek Chand Foundation.
Hats off and Big thank you to Mr. Nek Chand !!!
