One Time Password (OTP).

Today I was booking my Dad’s airline ticket over the phone and in that the airline representative asked me for an OTP for making credit card payment. I had heard of this OTP before also and had done transactions with this but then I thought might as well write a small post on the ways to get OTP from different banks since they all have slightly different ways. I use HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, CitiBank, State Bank of India credit cards so I will be sharing about these as of now.

From February 1, 2011 the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) made it mandatory for all Mastercard / Visa credit cards transactions over the phone to have an One Time Password from the card issuing bank. This step is to favour the credit card users and to avoid fraudulent transactions thereby safeguarding the customers.  This OTP is required when we want to use our credit card for bookings over the phone, IVR, mobiles, etc.  All banks send the OTP as a SMS when you send a request to them as SMS or phone call. The OTP is valid only for 1 transaction and the validity period for it varies from bank to bank.

Following are the ways to get OTP from different banks I use –

Increase in Investment limit for Public Provident Fund (PPF).

There is some good news for all smart investors and readers who had read my previous post on Public Provident Fund (PPF) – A must have investment here on .

Central Government vide notification dated 25th November, 2011 has increased the limit for investment in Public Provident Fund (PPF) from existing Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 1,00,000. Further, the interest rate on such savings has also been increased from present 8% p.a. to 8.6% p.a. The amendments will be applicable from 1st day of December, 2011. Please note that there is no change in the overall limit of eligible investments of Rs. 1,00,000 u/s 80C. This looks like a lucrative investment avenue and so I would recommend that full limit of Rs. 1,00,000 of deposit in PPF Account should be availed even though on account of other eligible investments u/s 80C, it may not give any additional tax advantage.

Common people start planning your investments keeping the above changes in mind. Happy Investing :).

SKYPE – Multi-functional tool for Online Communication.

I’ve been using Skype for quite some time now and I’m very happy and satisfied with it. In simple words if I need to tell the prime advantage of it then I would say “Total Value for Money and Time”. In today’s fast times everyone is looking to save time and money and Skype does exactly that whether it’s for personal use or professional use.

To define Skype in lay man language – A free software which allows users to talk with friends, family, colleagues, clients, etc around the globe for free of cost or minimal cost. It’s pretty easy and fast to download the software from their site and calls can be made free of cost from skype to skype and from skype to mobile / landline device at minimal costs which varies from country to country. Skype also has some paid services and paid subscriptions which might be of use for professional or regular callers and in long and continuous run. Recently my nephew shifted to Toronto for his higher education and my cousin couldn’t accompany him there but no worries since Skype was there. My nephew showed her his full college campus and also his apartment over Skype and that too for free ( Just need a laptop and internet connection ).

Few benefits I would like to jot down here are as follows –

Diamond Clarity Grades.

An experienced professional uses a 10x power magnification in standardized light to examine the clarity grade.

FL – Flawless – Loupe clean: no external or internal features.

IF – Internally Flawless – no inclusions and only minor external features, with the exception of small external growth lines.

VVS1, VVS2 – Very Very Slight Inclusions: very very small inclusions, which are very difficult to see.

VS1, VS2 – Very Slight Inclusions: smaller inclusions ranging from those which are difficult to see, to those which are somewhat easier to see.

SI1, SI2 – Slight Inclusions: inclusions, which are easy (SI1) or very easy (SI2) to see. The inclusions are often in a central position and can be immediately recognized and, in some cases, are also visible to the naked eye.

I1, I2, I3 – Pique: distinct inclusions which in most cases are easily visible to the naked eye through the crown; in the case of I3, stone durability can be endangered.

SI3 commercial clarity grade is not accepted by GIA.

P1, P2, P3 commercial clarity grades, some gemological laboratories accept these grades, especially laboratories recognized by CIBJO in Europe.
